Quick question? Did Erik Buell try to patent hybrid motorcycles?
Isn’t that unreasonable? how can you patent a ways of motion, or better still, how can you patent something every car company uses just on the basis that it is for a motorcycle ?
What if this patent is stopping us from having hybrid bikes?

I am definitly not a lawyer, but the bigger problem with hybrid bikes is weight. BMW made one but it was even more of a porker than usual
Plus, motorcycles don’t really need better mileage, they’re pretty damn efficient as is.

I’m thinking more about emissions to be honest... because bikes emit a lot of emissions.... or a good mix between electric and gasoline rather than having electric bikes and normal bikes...a good comprimise

You can’t patent a means of motion but you can patent means of propulsion. You can patent a given hybrid system - think Toyota. Others then have to come up with a different way.
So in theory, yes you could come up with the cheapest, lightest, best way to have a hybrid bike and patent it. Then use that patent to block the entire industry.
In reality though, the costs and weight of putting a hybrid system on a bike are just not worth it. The market doesn’t exist. That’s why we don’t have hybrid bikes.

I suspect so...
I guess you could have a Design patent... which is what I might look for as an engineer further on...

They could put a cat on a bike to clean up the emissions. I don’t think bikes currently run them. That would be a faster, cheaper alternative to clean up the emissions.

True, they do emit higher relative emissions compared to a car, but in the US, the bike market is too small to get any sort of political pressure to ‘clean up’ like the car industry. It would be a very niche market to try to tap into. Most people here who can afford a bike, usually have another sort of fuel saver to pair with the bike. Myself as an example! forgoing the wealthy part anyway....

Mr. Buell also has a pending patent for an emissions device... we shall see what happens...

I guess in Europe as citie start banning diesels we will see more bikes making them look harder at us... so will we in Asia as cities develop without public transport infrastructure and wealthier citizens with mopeds.

It doesn’t look like a patent of “ways of motion”, but of how the motion is generated and powered. It looks like this patent is fairly specific? It sounds like the Chevy Volt of hybrid motorcycles, the ICU charging batteries that power the electric motor.
ICU is above the electric motor
ICU and motor are under the seat
Battery is under the seat
Fuel tank is integrated into the frame (Buell)
.25gal - 3.94gal tank
electric motor capable of over 200hp
ICU of over 300cc

This patent is limited in scope. The supporting claims have it narrowed down pretty far. Also, it was abandoned then picked up on the cheap by Hero in India. 2012 is pretty late to be filing a patent (a provisional, even) on a hybrid motorcycle. They made it unique by including a fuel-in-frame design, and over 200hp.
There are no hybrid motorcycles because they are heavy as all hell. The packaging is a struggle, too.

Buells are known for having fuel in the frame...

Right, but they’re the only one. And by specifically making it a claim, you could copy every part of this in a design, but give it a standard fuel tank, and there’s no infringement. That’s the only way they got a hybrid motorcycle patent through the system in 2012, instead of the 90's.

Yep, the bigger problem I see is all the older bikes on the road around the word, I am sure they are spitting out emissions just as bad as diesel, and there is a LOT of bikes outside of the US. Hell, most people in asia use them as daily transportation

Newer bikes do, but only in the last 15 years or so. But, lots of people remove them

hybrid bike are stupid. by the time you put in a battery worth having, an electric motor worth having, and a gas engine worth having, you will be looking at a VERY heavy and VERY complex bike.
in canada and the states, it wouldnt sell. bike are toys here. not actual transport.

I can see a market for europeans whose governments might not like the very polluting, very loud motorcycles in their cities running ICE engines, perhaps this could be the solution to the problem of electric bikes having pathetic range...specially for maxiscooters that are all the rage there

So... its a design patent?

still doesnt solve the issue of the bike weighing 600lbs and being impossible to work on yourself.
hybrids bike are a dream until we get better battery tech or bettre engine tech, or both.
Scooters are already pretty dam good at saving money on gas. even a 650 maxi scooter will get you 50MPG on the freeway, in the real world.

The packaging requirements of a bike are enough on their own to dictate that a hybrid wouldn’t work. You have enough room for gas or electric, not both.

But is it a dream worth having? I think it is... specially because I suspect that my city will be starting to implement tough emission controls on bikes which will probably asphyxiate the bikes that do have emission controlers, and take off the street all the ones without even basic (read: cheap) emission controls....it could become the “uber-eats catastrophe” because most delivery people use motorcycles.

with the money that you would spend on the engineering a nybrid that FIT in the bike and is actually useable, it going to be like a 20K maxi scooter.
attainable dreams are good. ones that arent attainable are just going to be a pain

Apple patented the rectangle with rounded corners. Corporations are now people too, so EBR can patent anything they want now.

For a specific design yes. I’m not sure why they’re sitting on it though.
